In Expertise in Action, ProductLife Group spotlights the people whose expertise helps translate complexity into measurable value for clients and healthcare systems. For Elisa Elena Mariano, that impact lies in market access and HTA, where scientific insight, strategic thinking, and trust all need to come together.

In this field, technical expertise is essential, but it is not enough on its own. Market access decisions are shaped by evidence, expectations, stakeholder dynamics, and the ability to position a strategy credibly. The difference often lies in how expertise is communicated.

Elisa’s work reflects exactly that balance. As P&R and HTA Strategy & Support Service Area Manager, she brings together a scientific background, managerial training in healthcare, and deep specialization in market access and regulatory strategy. This combination allows her to connect analytical rigor with a broader understanding of context, priorities, and execution.

One project that particularly illustrates her impact involved a national HTA engagement where the client’s Market Access Director had initially preferred a different vendor. What changed the relationship was not a single presentation or isolated result, but the way strategy was built and communicated: clearly, realistically, and without overpromising.

For Elisa, competence becomes truly valuable when it is matched by transparency. Presenting strengths and weaknesses honestly, aligning expectations with achievable outcomes, and remaining clear and respectful even when strategic reality does not perfectly match the client’s initial assumptions are, in her view, what build long-term credibility. In this case, that approach helped turn skepticism into trust and ultimately led to further engagements.

Her perspective on excellence is equally grounded. In consulting, she sees excellence as the synergy between expertise and client approach. There is no single formula that works for every client, because each organization has different needs, expectations, and communication styles. The ability to understand that context and adapt without diluting rigor is what allows expertise to create value.

That same mindset has also shaped her leadership journey. One of her most significant challenges was moving from being a strong individual contributor to becoming a true people leader. Over time, she came to see leadership less as direct control and more as creating the conditions for others to excel: building context, enabling autonomy, and supporting long-term development rather than only immediate execution.

This way of thinking reflects something broader about PLG. From the client perspective, the value lies in the ability to offer an integrated, global approach that understands needs at 360 degrees. From the employee perspective, it is an environment that supports development, consistency, and sustainable performance.

In the end, Elisa’s work is a reminder that progress in life sciences does not depend only on knowledge. It also depends on the ability to turn knowledge into trust, and trust into action.
