From August 2026, French hospitals will be required to systematically integrate environmental criteria into their procurement processes, in line with the Climate & Resilience Law. This marks a major turning point for healthcare manufacturers, who will increasingly need to demonstrate the environmental performance of their products, beyond quality, patient safety and price.

To better understand how hospital buyers are preparing for this shift and what they expect from manufacturers, Nextep, a PLG company, conducted a qualitative survey with French public stakeholders involved in hospital procurement (buyers, purchasing groups, pharmacists, sustainability experts and public authorities).

The full survey report is available in French.

Key questions explored in the survey

  • Will environmental criteria become truly discriminating in tender decisions?
  • Is product carbon footprint (Life Cycle Assessment – LCA) on its way to becoming a standard requirement?
  • What type of environmental data do buyers expect from healthcare manufacturers?
